I imagine you're reading this because you're not happy with something right now. You might be looking for help through a crisis or struggling to understand or accept a difficulty. Perhaps you're feeling anxious, angry or stressed, unhappy or depressed, uncertain what to do next or just feeling that there must be more to life?
The Coronavirus pandemic is effecting all areas of life and its impact may be central to your concerns or dilemmas right now.
The idea of seeing a therapist may seem daunting but I know that it helped me. I wasn’t sure what to expect but found that counselling offers a safe space to talk about our concerns without being judged or criticised, helping find perspective and more peace in an ever demanding world.
The choice to enter counselling can also reflect a life-affirming impulse, a search for meaning or purpose, and possibly the most important thing is that you meet with someone who you can get on with and trust. This site will hopefully give you some sense of me as a person, my approach and how to take things forward, but if you decide I'm not the right person here's a link to the BACP directory.
So welcome...whether or not you decide to contact me, I wish you well.
about me
My name's Andy and I'm a psychotherapeutic counsellor based in Essex and central London. Before this I'd spent decades working in the City, before I realised something about the work didn't feel 'right' and retrained first as a coach and then in psychotherapy.
I hold a Postgraduate Diploma in Psychosynthesis Counselling awarded by the Psychosynthesis Trust in London and the University of Middlesex, and accredited by both the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP) and the UK Council for Psychotherapy UKCP).
I'm a registered member of the BACP and have full public liability insurance.
Qualified with London Meditation (now Centre for Mindful Living) I also teach MBSR and other BAMBA mindfulness-based applications, and trained with Active Hope London to deliver workshops that enable a strengthening of capacity to respond to issues of environmental & societal concern in our community and planet.
approach
counselling
You may wish to change a specific aspect of your life that's troubling you, or you may feel that something's just not right and want time and space to explore what that's about.
I have experience working with a range of issues including anxiety and stress, self esteem and life choices, relationship issues and sexuality, grief and loss, depression, addictions, and questions of meaning and spirituality.
My therapeutic space is empathic and accepting, enabling us to explore and reflect together, allowing whatever perception you feel is distressing to change.
My integrative approach draws on psychodynamics, person centred, gestalt & mindfulness, and by incorporating mind, body, feelings and soul enabling you to deal better with life’s dilemmas whilst also encouraging your larger potential in the world to emerge.
emergo is latin for 'I emerge'.
Psychosynthesis counselling provides a holistic approach to healing, growth and long term transformation. It's sometimes called Psychology with a soul, because it embraces the whole person. You can read more about that here www.psychosynthesistrust.org.uk
next steps
If this sounds worth exploring further please contact me by e-mail or phone, and we'll fix an appointment as soon as we can.
The first session is an opportunity for us to meet and get to know each other. It will be a time for you to ask any questions you may have about me or the therapeutic space and to talk about what brings you to counselling. At the end of this session we should have a good idea as to whether we want to work together and continue further, although you may want to think it over for a few days.
Once the decision is made to continue we'll establish a ‘contract’ that we both feel comfortable with. This will make clear the confidential nature of the sessions, the cancellation policy and establish our commitment to working together in regular weekly sessions. For example we may initially agree to meet for 8 weeks, to see how that works out. This may be a sufficient number of sessions or you may then decide to continue open-endedly.
I also offer therapy sessions online via Zoom enabling counselling to continue through this especially difficult time we're all facing together right now.
Each 50 minute session costs £50. I also have limited lower fee spaces available.
mindfulness & ecopsychology
I also offer a range of structured and bespoke courses to support individuals or organisations wishing to strengthen specific aspects of their inherent capacity. Areas people often wish to work on include building resilience, improving communication, and bearing the challenges of climate & ecological breakdown.
Mindfulness courses range from a one-off short Introduction to the Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction 8 week programme.
Ecopsychology workshops are based on the work of Joanna Macy, enabling people to honour their pain, gain fresh perspective, and so better face ''the mess we're in.''
Please visit Brentwood Mindfulness or Active Hope Essex for details of upcoming events, or contact me to ask any questions or discuss your requirements.
